History
The Monte was founded following the Lenten preaching of Observant Franciscan Paolo da Brescia, after a first attempt by Paolo's confrere, Francesco da Viterbo, had failed in 1469. Pope Sixtus IV ratified its erection with a bull in 1479. The chapters of the Monte were renewed at the end of the seventeenth century. The Monte ceased its activity in the first half of the nineteenth century, after 1818. In 1882, a Monte di Pietà was refounded in the city as a pawn section of the Cassa di Risparmio della Provincia di Viterbo.

Internal organization
The management of the Monte was entrusted to three officials (one depository of the money, one depository of pledges, one notary), under the supervision of the “Priori del Monte“.
