History
The Monte was probably founded following the Lenten preaching of Observant Franciscan Fortunato da Perugia, according to the hypothesis advanced by Vittorino Meneghin. The same author announced that Ilio Calabresi would publish the first statutes of this Monte, preserved among Deliberazioni del Comune (and, in coeval copy, in Archivio di Stato di Pistoia). Towards the end of the 16th century, the administration of the Monte, like the others in the Grand Duchy, was entrusted to a centralized Deputazione dei Monti Pii, created within the magistrature of Nove Conservatori del Dominio e della Giurisdizione Fiorentina.

Archival history
The Historical Archive at Biblioteca Comunale “Piero Calamandrei“ in Montepulciano does not yet have a guide. The “Monte pio“ series is identified with the letter Y. It is not possible, in the current state of the available descriptions, to provide a precise consistency of the series. Documentation relating to Monte di Montepulciano (1611-1763) is also preserved at Archivio di Stato di Firenze, in the fund “Deputazione sui Monti Pii“ [http://www.archiviodistato.firenze.it/inventari/n/novemontipii/].
