History
The election of the Monte was approved by the Council in May, 1489, following the preaching of Blessed Bernardine of Feltre in the city. The new foundation was almost immediately attacked and accused of usury by Augustinian preacher Mariano da Genazzano. In 1953, the institute was recognized as first-class Monte and, in 1970, it changed its business to ordinary credit. For this reason, the date of termination is set that same year, given the profound transformation of the entity's purpose. In 1977, it changed its name to Banca del Monte di Lucca, which in 1992 separated the banking activity (continued by Banca del Monte di Lucca s.p.a.) from that of Fondazione della Banca del Monte di Lucca.

Internal organization
The Monte was initially entrusted to a board of directors composed of 9 citizens (chosen by lot each year), by the Bishop, by his Vicar, by the guardian of the convent of S. Francesco and by a canon of S Martino. The religious members only participated in the council until 1515. The management was entrusted to a grower, which was immediately added a second.
