Monte di Pietà activities

History
First statutes and the first known documentation of the Monte date back to 1497. The date of foundation was however often brought forward, going back up to 1490 (or even up to 1454, claiming continuity with the Monte dei Meriti). Vittorino Meneghin proposed, at the latest, 1494. Starting from 1507, the institute imposed an interest rate of 2.5% on loans. The institute ceased its activity in 1532 - as a consequence of the occupation of Ancona by Cardinal Accolti - resuming it in 1547, only to interrupt it a second time shortly thereafter. It was refounded on the initiative of Pope Sixtus V and, on the occasion, it was equipped with new chapters. The Monte operated continuously until 1797, when the Napoleonic occupation of Ancona forced it to shut down again. The Monte was reconstituted in 1818, and, in 1828, it changed its name to Monte dei Poveri della Comunità di Ancona and was moved from public prisons to new spaces in the Palazzo del Comune. By Regio Decreto of March 31st, 1941, the institute incorporated Monti di credito su pegno of Osimo, Offagna, Jesi and Arcevia. By Presidential Decree of December 26th, 1972, it was incorporated into Cassa di Risparmio di Ancona.
